All Around Maui: ‘Ōhi‘a's birthday lei. July 31, 2005
When Tree was a baby, Monique started the tradition of making a haku lei
for each of his birthdays. ‘Ōhi‘a's first came a
little after his birthday, but today we did it. The haku lei is made from
ti leaves, local ferns, and of course, ‘Ōhi‘a
branches and lehua flowers (the flower of the
‘Ōhi‘a tree).
Because Monique didn't have a lot of time, she made this lei in ten
minutes. She thinks it isn't as beautiful as
‘Ōhi‘a deserves.
