This web presentation is made up of the following topics:

At the bottom of Sliding Sands Trail, the trail system forks. We took the left fork, Halemau`u Trail, which begins with a flat walk across the crater floor towards the cinder cones at the north end.

Lunch

We found a table-like flat rock to be the perfect place for a rest and a meal.

Monique's mountain (Hanakauhi, 8907 feet)

Monique remembers many trips to this peak throughout her childhood. It now has special meaning for her. Other people call this peak Hanakauhi. It sits at the west end of Kalapawili Ridge.

Colorful bubbly lava with a hole in it

We discovered a little (house-sized) bubble of lava that formed an oasis for a few green things. The wall of the lava formation has a curious hole in it that lets you see to the interior of the formation.

It would have been better to put a person in this picture, to show the scale. The hole is at about eye level.

This picture is from the outside of the lava formation, looking inside through the hole.

Here's one exposed for the inside wall.

Although it was not windy today, it appears that the sand here gets blown by the wind into a rippled appearance. Notice also the curiously clean slab of flat rock in the foreground. These are unusual features for the Haleakala summit area, as far as my experience goes.
