I took this series of photos from the side of Highway 37 (click here for a map with the location marked), which connects downtown (Kahului) and upcountry (Makawao, Pukalani, Kula, Olinda). This is the road I travel on every day between home and the downtown area (for me, that means shopping, gym, Aikido, and doing any outdoor activities in the West Maui mountains). This particular photo location is near the lower portion of the upcountry area. The elevation at this point is 1580 feet.
The noontime light is pretty harsh in all of these photos. This doesn't exactly flatter the scenery. My impression is that a high percentage of the time, the light appears harsh on Maui. I hope to repeat these photos in early light (for the West Maui shots) and late light (for the Haleakala shots), but it's not often that I'm at the right place at the right time when the weather is doing the right thing.
The camera looks up at Haleakala (East Maui) with a wide-angle view.

From the same location as the photo to the left, on a different day. This time it was taken just before sunset.
