This pool is tens of feet deep, yet was perfectly calm today. The surface ripples in the water are from the wind. The ocean was quite calm today. On more vioent days, the waves crash over the lava and fall violently into this pool.

We are looking east across this little bay. The final set of photos in my January 18 photograph collection shows this exact same bay from the opposite side, facing west, on a stormy day. The splash you see in this photo is exactly what I was literally right on top of in this photograph from that collection.
